Vitamin deficiency symptoms in adults are common in people with autoimmune disease, and the reason I am writing about this topic is it affects me. Many of you receiving disability might experience this as well, so this can force you to work from home. It is no secret most of us are taking vitamin D and B12, and these are the two that often robs us of our energy. Read on if this interests you to learn the signs, and if you experience these you might want to consult a physician.
In 2015, the Federal Trade Commission released its new rules for Disclosure Compliance. These rules are set in place to ensure that readers or viewers of web media (blogs, Youtube videos, etc.) know if the blogger/presenter is sponsored, endorsed, or partnered with a different company. In blog terms, the readers need to know if the blogger is making money by sharing a link or product.

Are You Experiencing Any Of These Symptoms?
Since I am not in the medical field, I will be providing you information from the Mayo Clinic website. I also will share my own experience as well, so you know where I am getting my resources for this article.
- Shortness of breath
- Pale or yellowish skin
- Irregular heartbeat
- Weight loss
- I experience both numbness and tingling in my hands and feet regularly
- Muscle weakness
- Change in your personality
- Balance issues
- Cognitive dysfunction
- Forgetting things
- Difficulty remembering
I have been anemic my entire life, but as the years have gone by this has become worse. My body does not absorb the vitamins and minerals from my food any longer, and to make things more complicated many foods I am not able to eat.
Fatigue Is The Number One Symptom
For most of us, fatigue is our most severe symptom, and without enough energy, you can’t work outside of the home. I even tried going back to college, but my lack of energy forced me to give up that dream. When you are low on energy you are not able to function effectively, you often struggle physically and mentally. Anemia is becoming more common in people, so here are the symptoms from the Mayo Clinic to watch for.
- Folate deficiency
- Celiac disease
- Small intestine surgery
- The removal of your small intestine
- Bypass procedure of the small intestine
- Some prescription drugs
As I shared with you food is a problem for me, so one reason is celiac disease. For anyone unfamiliar, you are intolerant to any foods with gluten in them. Barley, rye, and wheat are your main gluten grains, and I am at the point now even gluten-free grains cause me digestive problems.
Many of us wake up with no energy, so we are not 100% even at the beginning of the day. When you are not sleeping well, you are going to struggle to do everyday tasks. Fatigue is one of the most common reasons people end up on disability, you just are not able to hold a regular job without the proper sleep.
What Happens When You Are B12 Deficient?
I am also B12 deficient, so my physician has me on a lot of vitamins. Some days I just am not able to function, but here is what are some of the causes.
- Gastric bypass surgery
- Bacteria growth in your small intestine
- Chrohn’s disease
- Celiac disease
- Tapeworm from contaminated fish
You will be extremely low on energy without enough B12, and there are people with this problem that their physician does not understand. Our autoimmune systems are breaking down, so more people are experiencing low levels of this vitamin and more. Gluten is extremely hard on your intestines, and the worse part is it does silent damage.
Are You High Risk For Vitamin C Deficiency?
Amazingly, I am not low on this according to my blood work. Here is what the Mayo Clinic says about being high risk, and if this sounds familiar consult your physician to be tested.
- Poor diet lacking all the food groups your body requires
- Intestinal problems
- Medical problems
- Alcohol abuse
- Some prescription drugs
If any of these fits you, I would check with my doctor. You can find out simply with blood tests, so it is not really a big deal to be tested. When you have a chronic deficiency like myself, you are a high risk for certain medical conditions.

What Can You Do To Prevent This?
According to the Mayo Clinic, a healthy diet is your best prevention. Many people today are on restricted diets, so many children experience food allergies. Our food is not providing the nutrients as in the past, but one reason is we consume way too many processed foods.
- Healthy balanced diet plan
- Vitamin B12
- Vitamin D
- Stop smoking and don’t start
- Drink alcohol in moderation
That concludes the Mayo Clinic’s article, so does it really sound to you this is going to work? I always ate healthy my entire life, but many of the foods that are healthy are bad for me. I also can’t digest dairy products of any kind, so I have to take calcium for my loss of bone density.
